Tesla is a very complex financial operation which, sometimes, sells some cars. From Musk's point of view it's working exactly as planned.

That's not that unique, my understanding is most of the major car companies are primarily in the business of auto financing, but they make cars to give people something to finance.
Let’s take a look at GM, as those numbers are readily available.
