Wikipedia New Design

It seems that Wikipedia is testing their new design. This new design only applied for few languages. Few that I know so far are Bahasa Indonesia, Japanese, and Portuguese.

Japanese page snapshot before redesign[1] and after redesign [2].

Mixed feelings with it. I see they are trying to better use the empty space to balance content vs other elements in the UI.

However, I think the focus on the left menu is unnecessary. The content feels more compact instead of more readable. In fact, I would revisit if the menu can be changed and let the content use the full width.

Btw, is this only available in the PT Wikipedia?

If you have a WP account, you can switch to this design in the settings:

I hate the low contrast difference in the sidebar background. It's just barely noticeable and really hurts my eyes.
