I see zero value in Mozilla building their own rendering engine when they abandoned all the potentially innovative stuff when they dumped Servo/Rust.
I would switch to Firefox instantly if they chose to replace Gecko with Blink - I'd have a compatible cross-platform browser with decent performance and would be able to install plugins on mobile, etc.
This argument about "monopoly" seems misguided to me. Maybe if you're a standards fetishist and you like having multiple implementations duke it out what's the "correct" implementation of whatever random detail.
I don't really see anyone actually significantly innovating in browser rendering space - might as well reduce it to a commodity that's packaged up and developed in open source by multiple vendors.
The only thing I see from the webkit situation is the whole web being dragged down by Apple protecting their cash cow/making sure web apps can't compete with app store.
