I only read the first article in the four-part series, which extols the virtues of darkmode. So perhaps later articles pick apart the first, or describe the nuances? Regardless, DarkMode is like a pair of sunglasses. Sometimes one wears shades, sometimes one doesn't... and some really cool people are always wearing them because they are so cool.
I don't use dark mode because it is good for my eyes. I use it because my eyes are full of floaters and dark mode hides the floaters while white backgrounds shine a spotlight on them. For me, it is all about comfortable viewing.
It's a false dichotomy imo. White paper is really comfortable and it's effectively grey next to a computer screen. That will be a trend one day (I hope). Not enough good middle-value themes with nice unsaturated colors.
solarized light remains the king imo. been using it for almost a decade and while I aesthetically prefer other color schemes I always end up back on it because it's the most comfortable for long periods.
I find Apple’s TrueTone works pretty well. Adjusting the screen based on the light in the room. The idea behind it is to have the screen react more like paper.
I really tried to make dark mode work for my text editor because I think it looks better, but for some reason I can't. When using dark mode I squint my eyes more, they get tired more easily and sometimes I even get a headache. This doesn't happen with light mode, I can look into the screen for 8 hours straight and I'm totally fine, so the exact opposite of what most people say.
Dark text on light background is objectively better. Light text bleeds into the background, making it harder to discern letter shapes.
I've upvoted you, and you may be right, but your last sentence could really be used as an argument for the opposite case - if the light bleeds into the background, then surely if the background is light, then it would bleed into the dark letters? And the effect would be enhanced since there is much more light on the screen in light mode?
> if the light bleeds into the background, then surely if the background is light, then it would bleed into the dark letters?
No that's not what the GP said.
As some one who has some color blindness I find colors pop more in dark modes. That's my main reason for using dark mode for some purposes e.g. IDE
Article seems bogus. Stringing together a few "studies," etc.
Seems like Wired is having a slow news day.
It looks nice and saves battery life on OLED screens.
I’m not expecting it to be “good for my eyes.”
White backgrounds have always hurt my eyes, been using dark mode for a long time as a result.
Yeah I don't think anyone thinks light mode damages their eyes. It's just bright and annoying with emissive screens (which is basically all of them currently).
I'll go back to light mode if/when we get high contrast high frame rate reflective screens.
