Keeping whatever phone you have longer is always a more "sustainable" option, and I'd expect that any subscription model automatically is optimized for increased consumption, and so is worse. Phones can last a long time now that the technology has matured (mine is 5 years old and I see no compelling reason to buy a newer one). Just buy a decent phone when you really need a new one, if you care about sustainability

It sounds like this is funding maintenance of the current product (physical and software) and discounts if you keep the device damage free. As it goes, this ends up better than an old phone as it keeps you up to date, keeps your phone from being swapped out more frequently, and employs some folks to do this in the process.

Phones are not like cars. They’re not “done” when they ship :/

Don't know what car you own, but I'm pretty sure I've spent more on my car in maintenance and service since I purchased it than the original purchase price.

Add to that the recalls for faulty airbags etc and I see a car as being a lot more high maintenance than a phone, which baring security updates does not require any further work beyond recharging and wiping off grubby fingerprints every now an then.
