I think the first time I became aware that there was something called a "personal computer" was when I saw an add for the IMSAI 8080 in Scientific American when I was in about the first or second grade. I immediately wanted one, because of all the pretty buttons, but it was still several years before my parents got me a computer, a TI-99/4A. It wasn't as pretty though.
