Ask HN: Would you host your new SaaS startup on Heroku?

I've seen some negativity about Heroku, specifically around their staffing and investment since they were acquired by salesforce. Interested to hear general sentiment from the community. I would also be interested to hear about alternatives.

Render is the new Heroku. I'd look at them, also maybe Fly.io for a bit lower-level approach, as solid alternatives to Heroku. Generally cheaper as well.

I would host it in a dedicated server in ovh and hetzner. Saves me tons of money and probably even time too as i dont want to learn the whole Heroku system

No.

I appreciate the feedback. Any major reason or just generally unimpressed? Would be interested to hear what vendor(s) you prefer.

Never got into Heroku. Didn't see that it was difficult to spin up a server and host services on it.

Today I'd look at Azure or AWS and probably put up an application server behind a CDN. For a low traffic application where I just don't want to think about keeping the server up and the high price per request is no issue (say subscribe/unsubscribe to a mailing list) I'd use AWS API Gateway.

I like Cloudflare's CDN and look forward to their offering getting stronger for interactive applications.

Why is that, what would you use instead?

One can get away with a lot with just using Heroku, it is entirely possible to have $1M+ ARR with little overhead just by using Heroku.
