First, they laugh at you,
Then, they tell you it's not in the orthodoxy,
Then they tell you they knew it all along.
As trite and simplistic as that is, I find it to be a reliable prediction; I think what it really reflects is an instinct to resist change, to unconsciously follow the status quo. By the last stage, the innovation becomes the status quo and it's sincere in one way: the people who 'knew it all along' truly followed the status quo all along.
What is the cycle for failed innovations? An end stage is schadenfreude. In fact, the end stage is exactly the same: They 'knew' all along that it would fail, it just has some schadenfreude added.
All the stages may be the same. If someone predicts every challenging innovation will fail, they'll usually be right! And regardless, they are sticking with the status quo throughout.
