Ask HN: Is there any good wired mouse in the market?

Last year, my cheap HP mouse started giving me a huge amount of pain in the arm. It was tiny and I had a really poor grip on it most of the times (I have long fingers).

So, I started searching for a replacement. My criteria were that the new mouse should be ergonomic, large and wired. I scoured the review sites, shopping sites, the whole shebang.

I couldn't find a single mouse that fits all the criteria. Hence the question.

P.S.

1. I eventually bought a wireless mouse, an ASUS MW203. It is reasonably large and it has helped reduce my pain a lot. But sadly, I couldn't get my hands on it's mythical wired version.

2. It is surprisingly hard to find a large mouse in the sea of compact and portable (read: small) ones.

3. I prefer going wired when it comes to electronics and stuff. They are easy to repair and disengage (you just have to pull the wire). It is just a preference and not a crusade against wireless devices.

This is one of my pet peeves too!

It sounds like we have similar preferences, my perspective is that they basically stopped making usable mice and keyboards 20 years ago, and nearly everything since then (especially via regular retail channels) has stupid gimmicks like extra programmable buttons, wireless, lights, is way too small ("laptop"), flimsy build, etc.

One of my favorites is the Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical:

It does come in USB too, and various colors. Although the model is 20 years old or something, you can still get them occaisionally on Amazon, ebay, etc as new old stock, OEM versions, etc. Whenever I see some, I grab a few to keep me going for the next few years.

Unfortunately, it was always out of stock for me :(

I've used a zowie weird mouse for nearly 10 years now, I'd buy another.

This is awesome. There seems to be a large (and even extra large!) version available as well. I have added it on my shopping list to give it a try.

A question though: is it narrow and long? I have felt myself to be more comfortable with wider ones because they keep all my fingers on the body and not dragging around the mousepad.

As far as Zowie mice go, the EC1 is the beefier, wider model. Steer clear of the FK1 as that model is the narrow and longer one. There are a pretty wide array of other models to choose from aside from those as well.

https://www.goldtouch.com/ergonomic-mice/ are pretty large. Their aim is that you keep your whole hand on the mouse or rather as little wrist on the desk as possible. Largest mouse I own. I also use their keyboards (one wired for 10+ years, one bluetooth for travel).

Just visit a store that has various models and display and allows to "feel" them - e.g. Best Buy. That will give you the best idea what works for you.

I'm personally quite used to the Logitech shape so my last purchase was a G502 Hero - but other brands and models might work better for other people.

I found the monoprice dark matter to work well for me, but I would say I have “medium to large” hand size for most males.

Unfortunately, this is not available for my country.

Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical: It is a largish standard wired mouse. Very good optical engine, popular among FPS players. It can be overclocked as well. Yes, you can overclock a mouse. They sell them sealed in package on sites like eBay.

Why not get a standard MS mouse and paper mache it into whatever shape you want?

I like the Logitech MX518. I don't know if it's large like the MW203 is, but it's definitely not small.

Have you looked at a vertical mouse? It solved many of the same frustrations I had

have you checked LG g502? I don't have long fingers imo, so not sure if it fits your purpose but I have been using it for 8 years now (bought a new one 2 years ago since first one worn out)

Did you mean Logitech G502? I tried searching for LG G502 but it doesn't seem to be appearing anywhere on my regular shopping sites.

yeah sorry I meant Logitech g502, not lg

that is certainly odd.

I love the 502 Hero mouse. I have the wired version on all my computers. Seems like it took me forever to find my perfect mouse.

I've tested many models these years and G502 is both good for gaming and coding. If your work deals with large code files or excel sheets you will definitely need the infinity scroll. It also got five programmable side keys that can automatically switch profiles based on the active window.

I am not sold on programmable keys (yet) but I do deal with a lot of code and scrollable data. Will definitely check out 502.

I use the Logitech MX Vertical, highly recommended.

I was actually looking for MX Vertical but it is not available in my country :(

Contour Unimouse. Highly recommended.

Kingston Trackball wired.

Seconded. When I have to use a desktop PC, I always use my Kingston Expert Mouse Wired. I hear they're better for ergonomics and I'm not sure about that since I've never had pain with any mouse, I just prefer that the trackball doesn't need any extra space or hand movements like a mouse does.

This one is interesting. I've never used a trackball mouse so I'm not sure how long it'd take for me to be productive. But I'll definitely try one at office to get a feel. Thanks for recommending this.
