Not that I am impressed with Elon or hold him high: But I don't think many people would be particularly eager to go from building an autonomous self driving EV car to building an overhyped hyper-sold bug raising platform.

Being centered in australia is a plus with it's laid back lifestyle but nothing else is a plus

Not every software dev at Tesla works on self driving. Also would you want to work on something that'll never work? (I own a Tesla but I can't resist trolling here).

When the proposed alternative is a remote workflow with Jira and Confluence shoved down your throat as a matter of corporate dogfooding policy, I do wonder how much of this is the pot calling the kettle black.

There's a difference between hard and feasible though. I love solving hard problems. I want to work on hard problems. I don't want to work on something that I don't believe is solvable. It's a prerequisite for me to intuitively believe something can be done. There was no feasibility question around going to the moon, it was all engineering.

At the time of Kennedy's discourse, the only US mission (Mercury-Redstone 3, or Freedom 7) was a 15-minute suborbital flight at 101.2 nautical miles high.

I guess that in 50 years people will say that self-driving was "all engineering".

I doubt people will say general intelligence or fusion are "all engineering" in 50 years. We'll need some sort of breakthrough. There's the "weak" self driving we already have and there's the "strong" replace a human or outperform a human in any situation which is more like general intelligence. These are very different kinds of problems. I'm not well versed in the details of the space program but I doubt there were many "impossible" steps that required some fundamental scientific advancement. But hey, +1 to the optimism that we'll still be around in 50 years ;)

Well, first of all, attempted self-driving stuff isn’t Tesla’s product; many of those people are working on the infotainment thing or the fart app or the website or whatever. But also, many, often most people in any large tech company don’t work directly on the product; they work on infrastructure.

It doesn't matter. If i had to choose between working for Tesla for lower pay and coming to office vs remote Atlassian which is just jira shoved down corporate policies I am 100% going for Tesla and I am not a Tesla/Musk fan at all

Musk literally believes in the Chinese model of 996 work culture. He does practice what he preaches but has string of failed marriages to show for it and has no problem calling out anyone who doesn't do the same. So providing a counterpoint is good. Frankly I'd prefer to work at a remote company like air bnb.

Why don’t more companies take up the gauntlet that Musk threw down? It’s such an obvious opportunity.

Pretty sure I heard some horror stories on HN about the mess that is Atlassian.

I found a bug once where you could @ any user in a multi-tennant install of confluence. They ignored the report for two years until someone bruteforced a ccomplete list of users and emails from their public facing support site and published it to the ticket.

They then 'fixed' it by suggesting use of an apache reverse proxy with a mod_rewrite rule.
