It's been a long time since I wrote any PHP in anger but back when I did, I got a ton of mileage out of CodeIgniter (https://codeigniter.com/). It looks like it's still around and being actively maintained. I can quite clearly remember a number of projects that went from being just an idea to 90% functional in the span of an evening.

I write Python almost exclusively now, but still pine for something like CodeIgniter. Flask is nice because it lets you bolt on whatever you want, but you spend a lot of time choosing, prototyping, and often discarding libraries. Django does a lot of heavy lifting but has (IMO) a very steep learning curve. There doesn't seem to be anything (or at least anything I've liked) in between.

Same here, love Codeigniter. It’s the perfect combination between not using a framework and having most of the features you need. I remember learning everything by reading the manual in one evening and I was ready to go the next day.

I worked on projects with Laravel as well but it never clicked for me. It feels to me that Codeigniter is one level of abstraction lower which I appreciate

Very happy to see the CI is still around and kicking. I was afraid after Ellis Labs that Laravel would take over and that would be it. I agree that the level of abstraction is just about perfect in CI for a brand new noob--Laravel for whatever reason just doesn't quite get there (maybe it's all of the backslashes) IMO.

I had to change over a Drupal CMS project to building one with a framework. I looked around and chose Yii, which turned out to be a great choice. I used it a bit for personal projects which also went well. The migration to v2 on some later personal projects was challenging due to the lack and mixed documentation/search results.

Me too, one of my first projects was building an app with CodeIgniter that was interacting with a Magento shop backend. Was so cool when we finally were able to trigger an order in Magento from our CI app. Whatever one thinks about PHP, it does get a lot of devs started in web programming.

I think you should check out Nette, if you cherish and love codeigniter, Nette is even way too simpler and gets things done.
