The only major downside with hooks is that they are sort of non-intuitive imo. Writing UIs with hooks once you grok it properly is really nice and terse. What's your beef with them?
It destroys pure view layer as pure function and that makes it less compostable/reusable. Not be able to just a view function by just passing arguments.
