Health, education, housing, these are all factors that we need to be able to sustain ourselves in modern society. And at a base, but dignified place, they should be provided by the state.
Anyway, not everyone agrees. And most importantly, most politicians disagree. Arguments I often hear are the following: "I was poor and i was able to overcome it, it's possible" and "If we give to poor people, they are going to keep being lazy!". I think these two arguments have a lot in common: the notion that poverty is kind of a choice. It is extremely unfair that someone that is born in poverty has to put, 3, 5, 7 times the effort than someone that was born in wealth. Really, as someone that is privileged, I think it would be impossible for me to put in 3 times the effort that I have put into things. But I never had to do it.
Life is pretty unfair, but I think the role of society is to make it less unfair.
