I’m an industrial design student who recently completed a senior capstone project (the largest and final project of our program).
Through individual research and consultation with professors and doctors employed at my school (Thomas Jefferson University), we developed a focus on light therapy. Our product evolved through the semesters to its final version, a readily deployable, hygienic light therapy device for assisting athletic trainers in treating knee trauma.
Our school was bought a few years ago by Thomas Jefferson University and the result has been an increased focus on the medical collaboration utilizing internal connections.
To the scientific plausibility of such a device: I can link to research we used specifically though there is plenty out there. The majority of this project was completed under the assumption that certain wavelengths of light can speed up recovery of tendons and muscles.
Our specific implementation targets the knee due to frequency of injury and the specificity helped guide the project along. Using medical grade silicone as a sort of shell, they sandwich a plastic substructure which supports the flex circuits containing an LED array. These LEDs are a combination of red and infrared each of a specific wavelength range. Powered through a removable battery pack which is also a controller. Sadly the focus is on industrial design so developing a gui and prototyping that further was a very low priority though I’d hope to sometime flesh out more in the future.
Ask any questions as i have loads of information not in the final presentation and can offer some context for those unfamiliar with the topic.
Thanks for viewing!!!
To consult on this project for example, we spoke to one of our our school’s athletic trainers who showed us a light therapy device the school already owns.
