Ask HN: How do I find a good home improvement contractor?

My wife and I thought we were doing adequate due diligence in finding contractors for our new furnace, roof, and deck. Frankly, only the roof turned out great. Although they passed inspections, the other projects are mediocre, with ‘craftsmanship’ that looks like I did the work. Any suggestions for what to do for better results in the future?
