socialism != social democracy. Independent of the definition, I'd rather help people in need then step over them in the street. Abrahamic religions have helping others as a fundamental tenet, so denying that doesn't stand well with $GOD.

Addition: Weekends, limited work weeks, retirement systems, parental leave, single-payer medical systems, farm supports, import/export supports, ... Socialized processes seem to be well accepted in the West, so it can't be all bad.
