Ask HN: Any good introductory literature on design

Something similar to "Design for Hackers: Reverse-Engineering Beauty" but perhaps more in depth and with more theoretical background. Just browsing Amazon comes back with a lot of books, some with good reviews, some with bad. Seems that there's a lot written on the topic. So what would be a good start? I don't want web/computer design only - need some basic background too.
