I think Chomsky has been right frequently in the past particularly when it comes to the US support for authoritarian states with a secondary theme of failed efforts to create democracies in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ukraine is an democracy emerging from the cesspool of authoritarianism and corruption (they want democracy) and it is a very different thing to support Ukraine than to support (say) the Contras or the Sandinistas.
From the viewpoint of realpoltik it is tempting to just let it slide, keep burning Russian gas, buying Russian rocket motors, etc. There is a strong feeling that wells up from the people in democratic states, however, that compels action to defend Ukraine.
Note how in Germany members of the Green Party are much more inclined to send heavy weapons to Ukraine than other major parties. If you want peace sometimes you have to fight for it.
