The reasons "charge cards," as they were originally called, were invented was to make it more convenient for customers to pay. From the day BankAmericard (now Visa) launched, normal people could use it in normal stores to buy regular merchandise. This has never been the case with bitcoin and is unlikely to become the case without significant tooling and user-facing help that simply doesn't exist now.
If there is so much money in crypto, how come no one has addressed the terrible UI problems? Until your mother can buy something at retail with bitcoin, it's not a payment method.
The banks who, together, developed the modern card system (debit or credit makes no difference here), have already solved the problems of availability, scalability, and reliability.
In addition, they have solved the problems of reponsibility and refundability which are critical to any financial transaction and which bitcoin and its players refuse to address.
