Why don't social media companies react to negative signals from users?

I have no posting history to justify my comment being the only 1 hidden. The only justification is that I 'liked' or 'connected' the wrong people and therefore must be censored.
You don't know what I'm complaining about? If you don't care, why comment?
Kind of you to want to help me. I don't really do social media in general.
Elon wanting to fix Twitter made me want to create an account to see if I could detect conservative censorship. No history of anything to judge me against except who I connect to and likes. This is all it takes for twitter to censor. I'm basically going to delete twitter because it's pointless for me to stay on a platform that actively censors me for no valid reason.
You're wrong though to say it doesn't matter. This insidious degree of censorship skews democracy in an unhealthy way and effectively breaks understanding. Maintaining peace when understanding is broken can only be done by force temporarily.
So for example, Twitter and Canadian media covered the freedom protest in Ottawa as nazi confederates looking to overthrow the government. This was utterly false. Countless international media saw this remarkable story and covered the protest only to find that it was completely false.
Our PM reacted to protest as if it were nazi confederates looking to overthrow the government by using a never before used emergency act to crush a peaceful protest. He seized people's bank accounts who werent even involved beyond being a donor. After he pulled the trigger he realized the huge mistake he made and has been touring the world talking about how he supports democracy.
Damage is done, I don't see how Canadian society heals from this in the current state.
To the specific point about Canadian society, all I will say is that I live in a country that had a Prime Minsiter called Tony Blair and despite everything he did, he is still alive and well and totally convinced that he was right about everything.
You grossly exaggerate throughout your post. You are behaving exactly in the way that has discredited the protests. Quit shooting yourself in the foot like a damn fool! Report honestly, and you’ll find that people will grant you more credibility.
Not exaggerated though is it: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-conservative-swasti...
Lantsman used Trudeau's words against him.
"Conservative Party members can stand with people who wave swastikas. They can stand with people who wave the Confederate flag," he said
This is Trudeau himself saying it, I am not exaggerating anything at all. My comment being 'canadian media' who absolutely covered it much more. Canadian media absolutely covered it exactly how I said.
https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2022/02/07/nazi-flag-at-...
There was a grand total of 1 nazi flag and nobody ever positively connected it to the protest. The guardian may have tracked it down and they asserted that the flag was alleging that Trudeau is the nazi. Not that the flag holder themselves were nazis. I dont know if that is true or not.
which hey, bill maher commented on Trudeau. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i72czkSUsM
To note, bill maher made this comment BEFORE he crushed the protest using force.
>You are behaving exactly in the way that has discredited the protests.
On the contrary. The protests never got discredited. They got smeared by the media.

One Indo-Canadian trucker, Kamal Pannu from Montreal, I spoke to, was bemused that the protestors were being bracketed as white supremacists when so many of them including he himself are ethnic minorities and people of colour.
> Quit shooting yourself in the foot like a damn fool! Report honestly, and you’ll find that people will grant you more credibility.
Here's an interesting reality.
https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/to-tackle-vaccine-...
Antivaxxers tend to be racial minorities. Why do indigenous and black canadians not get vaccinated? I dont know. Why did the Federal government jump immediately to calling the protest a bunch of nazis when the protest was disproportionately not white.
I think mainly your comment is interesting. I wasn't really intending to get into the freedom protest. It was offtopic and just a lite comment.
https://albertapolitics.ca/2022/01/we-are-judged-by-the-comp...
Trudeau was not making shit up. Dude was literally standing there with some of the worst symbols of hatred and oppression being waved all around him.
Likewise, the rally organizers are unabashedly white supremacists. Have you never watched Pat King spew his effluent opinion? And tell me again about “so many of them” being ethnic minorities while I peruse the photographs of the crowd… the overwhelmingly white crowd.
And I can not believe you when you say you don’t know why First Nations people don’t get vaccinated. You’d have to live in a hole to not hear the news stories about natives being treated as subhuman by doctors and nurses. Shit, right now there’s a scandal where a premature baby in the NICU has a broken femur and the hospital is stonewalling its indigenous mother about WTF happened. Only the willfully blind and deaf can claim to not know why Indians don’t trust the medical system in this country.
If you think your fellow Canadians supported the protests or if you think your province (sans Quebec) was ever under a real lockdown… well, man, you have to get yourself out of whatever disinformation hole you’ve dug yourself into because reality ain’t what you think it is.
The protest didn't even allow any of that. All the actual hateful people were sent packing.
The left wing has taken to calling all conservatives nazis for too long. Harper was a nazi, scheer was a nazi. Bernier was a nazi. Otoole a nazi. Pollievre a nazi.
I absolutely know why first nations dont get vaccinated. I said I dont care, I believe in their right to make the decision. I dont support the government making decisions that disproportionately harm racial minorities. Our PM is a blackface wearing racist.
We as Canadians are on the same team. The left wing has gotten out of control with this smearing. As the NYTimes said, the protest must be allowed to continue. It was a legitimate protest and it would be bad for democracy if force were used to end it. Well force was used. There are now consequences for Trudeau's actions. It will take some extreme actions to restore democracy.
Seemingly the way the left-wing is acting is that we are not on the same team. Do you really wish to see us split? Because that's the direction it's going.
“Our PM is a blackface wearing racist.” Jesus Christ on a pogo stick.
HN needs killfiles.
The "freedom" protest was an anti-vax protest, no? I get the problem with being subjected to a mandated medical treatment but that's also balanced by a less than respected take on the anti-vax movement in general (IMHO being anti-science and anti-reason).
And as to censorship, there's some speech which is not healthy for society and should not be promoted. How that is done is a delicate and dangerous dance but to engage on that subject without acknowledging that issue is disingenuous at best.
Edit: I'll show a case of where "liberals" (a group that I would be lumped into) are wrong: cases where college students block access to speakers they disagree with. Wrong wrong wrong.
My point remains that not ever admitting fault is being dishonest -- lies of omission are still lies.
My side has never been in power. Cant really have failures if you've never gotten into power. Suppose we could discuss failing to win an election but alas.
>The "freedom" protest was an anti-vax protest, no?
No. It was simply anti-mandates. It was highly successful in eliminating most mandates.
> I get the problem with being subjected to a mandated medical treatment but that's also balanced by a less than respected take on the anti-vax movement in general (IMHO being anti-science and anti-reason).
That wouldn't be a fair characterization. For 2 years there wasn't a freedom protest. When much of europe and the USA had dropped mandates, Canada had actually gone the other direction and increased restrictions. The key catalyst being a new mandate that put significant number of antivaxxers out of a job.
>And as to censorship, there's some speech which is not healthy for society and should not be promoted. How that is done is a delicate and dangerous dance but to engage on that subject without acknowledging that issue is disingenuous at best.
If twitter quietly banned every tweet that just says racial slurs for example. Nobody would ever hear about it, if someone shows me they got banned because they said nothing but a racial slur. I would ignore them.
In fact all the twitter alternatives do filter racial slurs and such. There is no 'not healthy for society'
That's not what I showed is happening. I never said racial slurs. In fact I never said anything wrong at all. It is by mere association that I am punished. This is intentionally done.
My interest in the dialog is not to prove you wrong, but to try to see if some consensus can be found. It feels like a fool's errand but nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Saying that X is bad doesn't mean Y isn't also bad. You're just focusing on X at the moment. It's fine to discuss Y too, but consider whether it's relevant to the current discussion or derailing it.
It's unreasonable to address all issues when discussing a specific point. Furthermore, it's most reasonable and charitable to assume good faith on the part of your fellow participants.
Bringing in unrelated topics just to make some abstract point isn't very helpful to the discussion.
Imagine you were trying to open a soup kitchen to feed the local homeless population in your city, and every time you tried to discuss it someone pointed out that there's way more starving kids in Africa, so what about them?
Good example is the shift to "new" reddit. which by every measure is a resounding success, but you wouldn't know that if you engage with the vocal minority.
