I got an old PC on eBay threw in a dual port Intel nic and put PFSense on it. Boom done.

Similar small form factor boards can do the same and even be powered over Ethernet.

I had thought of that too for a while but it seemed like idle power usage was higher in a device like that than in a dedicated router. Maybe I am being nitpicky about that particular aspect.
