I've always used homebrew for git.

No benefits that I’m aware of. I prefer having the latest greatest, so I’ve always used the homebrew tap.

I use the macports version. As far as I am aware, there are no advantages to using the Apple version.

Out of interest any reason to select macports over brew? Since I started using mac brew seemed like the done thing

I’m not aware of any benefit to using the system git, as a user.
