As if video games, or art itself was ever apolitical. The only thing that changed is that women and minorities started carving out a piece for themselves within an industry. It became a problem for some people on the right, and their answer was online harassment. On the left this became a career opportunity for some people.

Still the market can't be stopped. There are new audiences now who want non-traditional experiences and proper representation, and they are voting with their wallets.
