Organized Crime Took over Canada’s Towing Industry

One of my employees got in an accident, and I immediately had the vehicle moved to my property from the impound yard to avoid storage fees. We had them move it to a spot far in the back of my building and around a corner. There is no way anyone knew it was there.

A few days later, a couple of guys came to my property, and a video shows they went straight to that vehicle and cut the catalytic converter off of it, then looked around for other stuff to steal.

I'm SURE it was people from the towing company, mad they didn't get a chance to charge more fees.

Speaking only for myself as a resident in a major city, towing is a racket! From booting to predatory towing and high fees, the whole towing industry could do with a RICO investigation.

Maybe not "organized crime", but the Lincoln Park Pirates in Chicago [1] were well known shady characters as long as 60 years ago, there is even a song about them (Steve Goodman). I know; one New Year's Eve a long time ago my car was towed and held for a ridiculous ransom.

If the government gives some company the right the haul your car off, then the government has the responsibility to carefully control for fraud in the process.

More recently, there was a case where private parking owners would mandate a towing company to remove cars not belonging to "customers inside" within a few minutes and charge the owner illegally rather than contact the police dept. to have it towed following city regulations. https://www.journaldemontreal.com/2021/10/16/des-remorquages...

If you go outside the metro area, getting a towing is another story. Either you call a mechanic shop who has their own and will tow you in or it's an independent operator who'll come and tow you when they free up their schedule.

LOL, I thought the towing industry was already run by organized crime.
