HN comment pages need a footer

59 pointssnprbob8625 comments

Sometimes, I get a little frustrated accidentally trying to scroll down past the bottom of a HN comments page. There is no marker to indicate the end of the comments. I never make this mistake at Reddit because they have some footer stuff. Maybe if the orange top bar were repeated at the bottom like a book end, I wouldn't have this problem.

Rumor has it that the Google homepage has the copyright notice to indicate to users that the page has finished loading: http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-12-19-n14.html

Makes sense to me :-)

What would be great as well is a column width limitation, so that reading on the Iphone would be a less frustrating exercise of scrolling sideways on each line.

Or reading on a wide-screen display, when somebody decided to put 500 characters of fixed-width text in a comment.

I agree, it needs a footer.

Would help with my Apple mouse that has a frustrating dodgy down-scroll.

Is it one of those horrible Mighty Mouses? The scroll ball on those is truly dire. Try turning it upside down and rolling it round really hard on the scroll ball and it should free it up for a few weeks. (After I got fed up of doing that, I went out and got a track ball!)

Yep, I found that turning it upside down and rolling it around on a clean, coarse piece of paper works well too.

Geniuses! I thought I had tried everything.

The mouse works amazing for 2 weeks or so, then the scroll dies and becomes harder and harder to fix.

I have had the most success with logitech mice over the years.

I have Logitech VX. It's the best mouse I've ever owned. But the free-spinning scroll wheel no longer spins freely now. Instead it's just the smoothest, nicest scroll wheel I've ever used. (I have scrolling speed cranked up to max, so I can still scroll a whole document easily, and not having any detents makes it easy to do a fine scroll anyways.)

Is there something similar that is bluetooth?

Wet-wipes are your friend.

Even a line or two of css-margin whitespace at the bottom would be an improvement.

Here you go, made a greasemonkey script to take care of it. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/33974

Actually what we really need is an easy way to transform these submissions into feature requests

instead of just killing them.

My apologies, I didn't know that existed. I use the RSS feed, so I never see the footer that is on the main page. I also tried a few queries, but http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Anews.ycombinator.com+f... didn't exactly return anything useful :-)

I don't understand why you auto-kill feature requests, seems to me the visibility and resultant discussion could be quite useful.

He probably wants his site to be a news and discussion site, not a bug tracker.

I think it would be nice to have a footer for consistency, too. Sometimes when I'm reading comments I try to scroll down to the bottom to click on one of the links, but realize I have to go back to another page for that.

Write up a greasemonkey script? It cant be too hard.

yeah,visually and aesthetically necessary !

Notice there's already this exact suggestion by fharper1961 rb that page. Only 2 upvotes so far...

Yeah. 61 days ago, and no replies yet.

Add a footer to the comments page. Justification : When I page down and hit the end of a page of comments, there is no visual cue in the page telling me that I'm at the bottom. Since I think I've gone down a full page, I lose track of where I was reading; which is annoying.

Should I assume that most of the people who want this have opted to hide the scroll bar that's normally on right hand side of their browser? Because for the other 99% of HN users, adding an orange footer would be visually redundant and only make the page uglier.

It would be safer to assume that most people, when reading/focusing on the text in the middle of page, don't actually SEE the scroll bar.

I have a scroll bar but have this is an issue for me as well. When I'm reading a thread of comments my visual focus ignores the periphery of the window.

It doesn't have to be an orange <hr>. Something as simple as a centered faded "Y" or ◆ would do.
