Disney Is Quietly Placing Classic Fox Movies into Its Vault, and That’s Worrying

It's seeming like piracy and Plex servers is the only way forward for people who want to stream stuff without having to worry about it getting removed eventually or the service getting worse year after year.

As always torrents don't have these issues.

An increasing copyright tax on very old works would stop this nonsense.

Or returning copyright terms to a reasonable 28 years instead of 95 years.

I’m not quite sure if that’s accurate. The distinction is that Disney isn’t allowing the movies to have for-profit showings. The movies are still widely available on streaming services or to purchase through iTunes. Alien was brought up as an example of a film in the article - the first four Alien movies are on sale for $20 on iTunes right now.

This isn’t so much Disney hiding the movies, but more that they’re limiting many to in home screening only.

This article is talking only about leasing to movie theaters not home viewing.

This is one of the biggest problems with streaming. Without actually owning media, anything even slightly controversial may become inaccessible.

This is a disservice to future generations as we're rewriting history.

This has nothing to do with controversial media, and everything to do with Disney using artificial scarcity to make more money.

The linked article talks only about releases to movie theaters, not home viewing.

But artificial scarcity creates new demand. Won’t someone think of the profits to be made?

(2019)

I consider making art and culture inaccessible to be one of the greatest crimes against humanity (after actual murder and any form of torture (such rape) of course).

Disney has done this for decades with their animated films. Letting things go out of print before bring them back a decade later.

This appears to just be limited to theaters?

Yes. It seems that people on Hacker News, despite the fact they think they are all 10x thought leaders, just like to talk about things without knowing anything. The linked article talks only about releases to movie theaters, not home viewing.

You should be more worried about all the pedophiles working there that are bending young minds...
