There is truth to this since India saw similarities between itself and the socialist world. However, another factor that fueled anti-Americanism was America's closeness with Pakistan (starting in 60s). I do not understand why the authors did not explore that aspect.
America only looks out for its interests, period. India knows that and is reorienting accordingly.
The US wont come to save India if Pakistan or China invade in the immediate future. Indian weapons are still mostly Russian. Thus, India can't do a clear break from Russia like Western Nato countries.

The Indian elites know ( or they should know ) that the US and the west are their enemies as well. If india ever starts to develop and rise, we ( the US/UK/Australia/Canada/EU/NATO/etc ) will be attacking india just like we are attacking china right now. Just like we attacked Japan in the 80s when their star rose and almost eclipsed the US.
India, Africa, Russia, China, even parts of south america, etc have the same common enemy - the West. The problem is that they simply cannot coordinated with themselves to counter the West. Together, they'd crush the west. If they ever joined forces, it would be the end of the international order started since columbus really. But individually, they are no match for the west. China has no shot against the West. India has no shot. Russia has no shot. They lack the racial, cultural, political, financial, etc cohesion that makes the West what it is.
India has made the most progress in the past decade than under most previous governments. Just recently there were regional elections which were won overwhelmingly by the party due to their socialist work in fixing some long-standing basic problems like guarenteed clean water to each home, electricity, free rations during COVID lockdowns, etc in one of the poorest states (by per-capita GDP).
