These morons should absolutely go to prison. Let’s be clear: there is a difference between being genuinely concerned about the processes around securing of digital voting machines and deliberately leaking actual confidential information to further a kooky conspiracy theory. These people are absolutely unqualified for their current roles and I am glad the Criminal Justice system is catching up with them.
Why would this be needed for analysing the software? This sound more like encouraging others to hack them.

Sounds like this was much more than leaking proprietary information. They actually planned to hack these machines and blame it on Wood if detected.
Imagine if this were an ATM or police equipment vendor.
