Looks like it was more for the anticipation of people buying bitcoins rather than reality. Once it didn't happen people started bailing out. It's back down. But ultimately it's a guess. Who knows what the real reason was?
In Bitcoin land this is ancient history. It has already lost all those gains and then some.
