It's kind of hard to reconcile how this article portrays his kids as some sort of national secret when a Putin-family-supplied photo of the two older girls accompanies the article.
He wants them out of the public eye for probably the usual reasons and they're probably happy to not be. I don't think there's much more to it than that.
Somehow I find this possibility a little reassuring.
