In particular, I’m looking to build a prototype of a vacuum cleaner. This means mostly being able to build a plastic container with a fairly complex design and smooth air flow pipes which most additive 3D printers are not very good at as far as I know.

This is maybe less helpful but, I've searched the internet for many things and discovered many treasures but in the end looking back... the largest treasures I've found have been from experimenting on my own hunch or curiosity.

You have an idea of what you want to build, just build it. Build a motor, build a box, put it in the box, see what happens, rinse repeat.

A prototype can involve hand work to get smooth flow.
