Ads on QR code menu of the restaurant

I am thinking of building a restaurant POS. I am adding the additional functionality of showing ads on the restaurant menu from the traditional POS system. The user will scan the QR code to see the menu. The revenue generated through ads will be split between the restaurant and me. It will help the restaurant generate secondary income. The traditional POS systems are expensive and are burden to small restaurants and food trucks. I am thinking of giving the POS system for free and earn using the ad revenue. One of my observations is that people spend more time on reading the menu than the Instagram Post. What are your thought on this?

I find QR code menus to be annoying, and they are exceedingly frustrating if you are with a group that doesn't all have smartphones, which includes families with kids. If I was forced into that frustration, then had ads inflicted on me, I'd likely not go back to that restaurant ever again.

For what it's worth, I always knock a star or two off my review for a restaurant if they won't give me a paper menu. It's fine if they lead with the qr code but I want to at least be able to ask for a physical one.

Yes I second this. Restaurant spending is discretionary, for the most part they can't be as anti-consumer as the rest of industry has become. Offering a code is fine, require it and I won't be back. Serve me ads and I'll leave.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. What do you think about the ads?

Yes taking up limited phone screen space when outsourcing waitstaff tasks to the customer sounds like a recipe for success.

Make sure they are popups too that occur randomly as they scroll through the menu to increase their engagement.

Also ensure you add in some hidden dark patterns like ticking default for donating to some sketchy charity during the payment process.

I guess I would not see the ads, since I would refuse the qr code option. I don't bring my phone into a restaurant.

In general I don't think I'd find a digital menu with ads all that much more objectionable than one without, I'm pretty desensitized to digital ads at this point.

I imagine there is a quick slope to popover signs ups that you cant ignore, or rapidly flashing stuff or whatever advertisers use to annoy people into interacting

It’s very annoying and after the first time I see an ad I’ll start asking for a paper menu.
