Just because it's "typical" doesn't mean it's not wrong.
Do things right and don't log or track or record anything that isn't 100% needed. You don't need telemetry or to surveil your users. Hell, even accounts and preferences can be made inaccessible and opaque by encrypting the process.

Then don't do it. Be better. I love the angle and believe Google is weak and a better engine has a real shot at shaking things up, but it shouldn't be yet another "trust us, we're not like the other sites!"
