Shoplifting is surging across America with dangerous and costly consequences

The article has a photo of four or five guys with hammers smashing and grabbing goods in a store. I'd call that a robbery, not shoplifting. The words discuss the problem but the image is misleading.

Maybe this is a language/culture issue. Even organised gang theft by mobbing is not what I think UK or Australian/NZ English speakers call shoplifting.

I seen on loss prevention on Reddit they had five people shoplift detergent in shopping carts and cleaned out the whole aisle and put them in a SUV. Then they sell it on Facebook or eBay at a discounted price. Organized gangs are doing this rather than work minimum wage jobs.

The smashing with a hammer the window is a riot and looting, which has been going on ever since Mike Brown was killed by a police officer. It is not just black people but people of all races doing that as a form of protest. Sometimes insurance won't pay for riots calling it an act of God.

No official statistics anywhere, and the only experts interviewed are all consultants for the retail sector. It’s basically a press release.
