I feel like his work with René Girard is the most interesting part of his life, with possibly his foundness to invest in apparent competitors (compared to other VCs). The creepy blood transfusion, the politics… trying to make him a boogey-man to the left (when he's more a structural opportunist) is really on the nose given his advisor's key work.
This is the basic problem with our democratic, capitalist, lasaiz faire system. Thiel has and will continue to have more power over the direction of our government than any of us. Why? Because he ammased an obscene fortune. But why is letting rich people have more power a good system of government? You could say it's ok because other billionaires are going to fund the other side and counter Thiel, but now we're talking about a system of government of competing oligarchs. Why have we given up on our democratic ideals of "we the people" ?
"Who is Peter Thiel, the tech billionaire trying to push the U.S. to the right?"
..asks the newspaper owned by a tech billionaire.
This article is a key example of why I can barely stand to read U.S. media anymore; the authors' bias drips over it. Everything is regarded in terms of "the left" vs. "the right", us versus them. Within the introduction the words "right-wing", "controversial" and "pro-Trump" have already been used. Not to mention "familiar with his thinking". What does that mean, some random person who spoke with him once? At least there's a fair bit of detail on his background, but it saddens me that everything has to be seen through the lens of "left" vs "right".
Why wouldn't you view a billionaire that is specifically focusing on electing right wing candidates through the left vs right lens?
Basically a rich gay guy with an anti-gay agenda. Curious what dynamic people like this would be like without being addicted to money and power.
