If you need to build a quick site and add functionality rapidly, WordPress and the proper plugins are an excellent solution. Alternatively, if your goal is to build a complex site that's geared toward a single purpose. It's probably not the right tool.
The decision should be based on the application not ego.
Wordpress solves a real-world need that a lot of people have, and does it very well. Not everyone needs an elegantly engineered custom application to throw up a few blog posts.
Suppose one of your not-so-tech-savvy mates asks you to set up and host a straightforward blogging solution for him. No bells and whistles needed. Which open-source solution would you reach for first, and why?
Nope.

templating programming like that is not what I call beautiful :
if ( is_user_logged_in() ) { wp_nav_menu( array( 'theme_location' => 'logged-in-menu' ) ); } else { wp_nav_menu( array( 'theme_location' => 'logged-out-menu' ) ); }
edit : what I dislike about it is the over-usage of global functions and variables
