Ask HN: Is the Windows development experience getting worse?
I am currently working on a project that makes use of Microsoft's Volume Shadow-Copy Service API. This is API is one of the most poorly implemented and horribly documented Windows APIs I have ever used.
However, frustrated as I am, I am not very surprised by this. As I have developed applications for Windows for the past 15 years, I have noticed the steady degradation in the quality of APIs/libraries and tools from Microsoft.
The decline in quality has been even more stark because I have spent part of the past 3 years developing applications for Linux using open source libraries and tools. Without hesitation, I can say that the open source libraries and tools I have used are better designed and documented, and more consistent in behavior. Their communities are more helpful and responsive too.
Does anyone else think the Windows development experience is getting worse?
