Tell HN: If your website has many pages, your Google Analytics are skewed

Say your website has many pages. For example because it has an endpoint like this:

    /show_color/FF0000

This would be 16 million distinct urls. One for each color.

A human will only visit a hand full of these.

But some bots will visit them all.

So far, no problem. Because Google Analytics filters bots.

But it seems to miss the "PetalBot". Which seems to be a bot Huawei uses for their search engine.

For me, 50% of my pageviews for the last month came from this bot. And there is no way to figure that out on Google Analytics. On Google Analytics it looks like normal traffic. This completely messed my interpretation of what people are doing on my website.

Being confused why so many people used certain pages, I logged the requests on the CDN. Only then I was able to figure out that these are not people.

Not sure if it is unique to this bot that it loads and executes the analytics script?

For now, I block the bot. But I am not happy about it. I am all for more search engines. But completely messed up analytics is nothing I can cope with.
