This way, people can customize their dark mode how they want to with a GUI rather than needing a whole new way to do it via CSS.

It boggles my mind that people are OK with adding extensions that can "read and change all your data on all website".

Probably the same people who had two dozen search bars installed back when that was a thing. What some people really need are buttons they can click to send money directly to Russia and North Korea - since they are going to get it anyway, just pay them. Have you seen Putin? The poor guy rides a horse and has no shirt - he needs your money now!

I'm all for what you say, but Dark Reader is so useful I'm willing to make an exception. Plus it's open source.

I've set up my Manjaro system so that with one shortcut (and automated at sundown) I can change everything to dark mode. And since Dark Reader has the option to follow the system dark mode, everything works wonderfully.

Can't do that on mobile, where you need dark mode most.

Materialistic is a good mobile app for Hacker News which has a dark mode. No affiliation, I just greatly like using it (Android).

FWIW: Harmonic is another good one for Android.

I don't know what your mobile OS is, but Dark Reader works just fine for me on Firefox Nightly for Android. Mozilla is still in the process of adding all of the web extension APIs to mobile Firefox, so you need to go through a few steps to set it up, detailed here: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2020/09/29/expanded-extensio...

Dark Reader just shows up in the addons section for me in fdroid Fennec, and Firefox mobile. I don't think you need to do anything special to get it to work.

Oh, thanks for letting me know. I have been using that little trick since they had first released that feature for unsupported addons and there were very few available then. That is good to know it is available in the supported list.

I want to use safari because I’m logged in wsj nyt and I also like the reader mode

The Noir extension [0] is nearly perfect auto dark mode for Safari. I’d still prefer the website handle it directly though.
