Google will make free ‘legacy’ GSuite accounts pay for its apps starting in July

I have one or two personal domains on legacy usage.

I moved or created all the family members’ personal domains onto Office365. Probably time to migrate those remaining domains.

This has been reported on numerous times already on HN. Why are we sending traffic to The Verge for a late report?

So only commercial use, but verge needed a clicky title.

> Google stopped offering the legacy free edition as of December 2012

Wonder how many places were still taking advantage of it ? I assume this means your work or school GSuite account was created 10 years ago.

No, even for personal use you have to pay now. I'm one of the people with a legacy GApps/GSuite account and I got the notice as well. While they initially said that GApps was a good usecase for families it seems they changed their minds about that a long time back and now they just assume everyone on GApps is using it commercially, there is no "personal" tier.

I find myself in a similar boat. Have you decided on an alternative? I'm not likely to start paying for Google Workplace but am happy to pay for another service. Thankfully my needs are pretty simple, I only ever used GSuite for my own domains and they only have one user account each.

I'm just going to pay. I only had 7 accounts (some were full backups of old email accounts, eg: oldemail@gmail.com -> oldemail@mydomain.com, some where used for alert email sending). I can prune them down to just my main and switch email alerts over to SES, that way I'll just pay $6/mo which I'm fine with for now. I might investigate alternative providers at some point but $6/mo is hard to beat and I'm happy with gmail.

It does sound as if anyone has G Suite Legacy Free accounts will need to start paying. There is a help article which outlines this in more detail: https://support.google.com/a/answer/60217?hl=en-GB

> Can I keep my G Suite legacy free edition subscription?

> No. All G Suite legacy free edition subscriptions must upgrade to a Google Workspace subscription. We recommend you upgrade to a Google Workspace edition that meets your needs. If you choose not to upgrade by May 1, 2022, we will automatically upgrade your organization to a recommended subscription.

Sure, I hadn't thought of people using G-Suite on a custom domain they control for personal reasons... I guess to have gmail at a different domain?

Ah that’s fair. I used it for a few small projects and personal domains, nothing commercial. Gmail felt way ahead at the time and having it free for my own domains was great.
