February 2023: Google is discontinuing its AR headset.
Ahem. You mean "An Update on Google AR..."
… “provide feedback about this ad” (ahem)
Excited to see an AR headset that launches behind the competition, isn't supported and then gets quietly discontinued or moved to B2B like Stadia and Google Glass.
I'll go ahead and add this to killed by google now instead of waiting.
Why not just improve google glass?
If memory serves, Google Glass only gave you a HUD - a flat UI superimposed on the real world. This article is about full AR, with artificial 3D objects blending into the real scene.
Google can't replicate its IM strategy in the AR space if it build on its existing product. No, it has to create a number of separate AR products, each with a slightly different feature set, and release those all in different markets so that no one product ever reaches significant marketshare before they all get discontinued for lack of uptake.
knowing how fast google shuffles around people, this could be a brand new team.
