The NSA logo used to be surrounded by a cypher wheel like that. That reappeared as NSA's Xmas ornament for 1998.[1]

A wonderful story from a time when reality and kid's imagination were seemingly much closer than they are now.

Does anyone have good examples of similar games for kids that involve interesting, tangible science with real-world implications that are simultaneously a collective thing?

Well put.

The problem with hyper-stimulating digital gaming imho is that everything else becomes un-interesting. Kids used to be able to get enjoyment from a wide range of simple (and tangible) things, but that list seems to be shrinking.

They still can, but you have to push them into it. The younger you start, the easier it is, because then they don't know anything different. I think giving them a tablet at age 2 is a mistake. Give them some paper and crayons instead. Have age-appropriate toys that can be reconfigured (duplo, lego, etc.) Get them into outdoor activities, sports, etc. It's up to you the parent to give them alternatives to sitting in front of a screen.

Looks like a good 3D printing project—if you were looking for something new to print.
