Ask HN: Its been stated previously, but is anyone else's Gmail inbox spam filled

I've been getting a lot of spam routed into my inbox instead of directly to spam for a couple months now. Before then, I never ever had spam not route directly to the spam folder.

It's been very strange. Things have actually gotten a little bit better lately, but for several weeks I was receiving several spam messages a day, all routed to my inbox. They all appear to be a similar format too, they all have a little area at the bottom with a fake company address, fake unsubscribe, and the subject is always sent using unicode text instead of ascii.

WTF?

It was just a few for a while... now its litterally 90% of my inbox...

What Happened?

Of the 1-50 items in my inbox's first page, ~10 of them are valid emails... the rest are spam.

I am entirely guessing but maybe they gave up tuning spam filters for the free service and shifted project points to the paid/corporate email service now that they have the process down?

Tonight, set aside 30 minutes to an hour, pour yourself a glass of wine, put on some half-interesting sitcom in the background and start unsubscribing from every undesirable source of email you find, from latest to least-latest. If you can't find a direct unsub button, use a service like Say Mine[0] to automate GDPR requests and have your name scrubbed from their records.

Yes, it takes a little bit of up-front effort. The payoff is fantastic though; a nice, clean inbox for the first time since you made your account so many years ago.
