The viewport meta tag is also a post web0, almost web2 forced addition. I say forced in the sense that it’s required for proper rendering in mobile even for CSS-free sites.

this is the thing everyone adds because someone said it was the right way.

it is the "assumption" that everyone does not want their user to _zoom out_ on mobile sites.

it is wrong, and nobody questions it

If you want your bigger font back, change the DOCTYPE to HTML4 and use a good ol' <font> tag instead!
