Kernighan's law is fun.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.
If effort is linear then, by definition, you should never put more than 50% brainpower in to your code.
I'm not sure I want to increase the effort I put in though.
