If I get a freebie baseball cap from an event I went to and wear it, that's signalling, even if the cap is economically worthless. Also, it's not all about signalling: I might buy a tshirt from a concert I went to, even though it's pretty overpriced, and I could have a copy printed for less if I wanted to, and it would have the same signalling value.
