BMW has long had a contentious relationship with cup holders. They flat refused for a long time. I think the argument was, if you’re driving right, nothing is staying in the cup. But it’s hard to sell a car without cupholders. So someone told the engineers they had to. And they did, but they’d use a deliberately absurd design. Check out the cup holders on the 2000 M5.
