Supermarkets drop Brazilian beef products linked to deforestation

Part of this is due to the truly awful image the current president of Brazil cultivates internationally.

Incindentally, agricultural business is the last remaining well functioning sector of the Brazilian economy of relevant scale. Any dent in it spells political doom for the incumbent.

Under whose law?

Actually this does not really matter a lot. It could be totally legal and a company could still decide that it does not want to sell beef produced like that and then it is just like that.

I'm not a big free market guy, but this is basically "the free market" in action. The supermarket knows it can get cheap beef from elsewhere, and knows that there is profit in taking a public stand against deforestation. The result is this and frankly it seems right to me.

Whether it matters or not is besides the point. The attached article claims that these supermarket chains will no longer source from farmers that engage in 'illegal' deforestation in Brazil. It is therefore reasonable to ask illegal under whose law? Brazil? UN? UK?. I thought I asked a reasonable question. I'm not sure what the downVs are about.
