Grant money for a tech startup?

Has anyone been successful at getting federal/state/or city grant money for their startup? I was looking into applying for several grants. I think it is worthwhile to try since it forces you to get a certain level of documentation done for your business plan and the same work done for a grant proposal seems to be appropriate to send to investors.
