- Not everyone has equitable access. Households have a shared phone with multiple kids etc. 20-40% of kids in India didn't have access to a smartphone to study[0]
- Signal quality in India isn't great everywhere. There are multiple reports of kids getting injured or dying because they were perched in high places where signal quality was better[1]
- The cost of data (while among the lowest in the world) is still an additional unplanned expense that many households couldn't afford.
Zuckerberg (just today, at the same event) said that the "metaverse is going to be the successor to the mobile internet."[2]. Irrespective of whatever the metaverse is going to be (mobile-first or not), India doesn't need content that will increase this divide (especially with any AR-enabled devices being significantly pricier compared to the others).
